The business began under the trading name of Arthur Dench & Sons in 1947, three generations on, the same family continue to run this respected Essex fishmonger. Although our grandfather did not have access to the selection of fish and seafood we have today, as storage and shipping methods were very basic, we continue to pride ourselves in the supply of quality of products as a modern Essex fishmonger.

As a young fishmonger, our grandfather began with only a few products, cockles, eels, shrimps and winkles, which were caught locally and served from a hut with wooden looped shutters. It was important that the days’ catch was cooked as quickly as possible so cockles were cooked and bagged into muslin nests and the fish was smoked right there on the boats!

Today we remain a leading Essex fishmonger and supplier of fresh and frozen fish and seafood. We have moved with the times and use modern methods of preparation and freezing to ensure the fish and shellfish is as fresh as the day it was caught. As a responsible fishmonger, we source produce sustainably and most our products come from the Essex and UK coastline. We are proud of our fishmonger heritage and continue to be a leading fish and shellfish supplier in Essex. We have been recommended by Rick Stein in his book “Fruits of The Sea” and met up with Jamie Oliver and Peter Andre filming their restaurant show in Southend.
